What is the VIOC charge on my credit card?

Facts checked

Short answer

VIOC is Valvoline Instant Oil Change, the drive-in oil change chain run by Valvoline Inc. of Lexington, Kentucky. The charge is a one-time service visit, usually an oil change, often with add-ons like wipers, a battery or a tire rotation. It isn't a subscription. If nobody with your card visited a Valvoline, call 1-800-327-8242.

How it shows up on your statement

  • VIOC
  • VALVOLINE INSTANT OIL CHANGE

Banks trim and reformat these, so yours may be shorter or carry a different city or number. Why charge names look strange.

Who is VIOC?

VIOC is Valvoline's own shorthand for Valvoline Instant Oil Change. The chain's website is vioc.com, and Valvoline's annual report uses VIOC as the defined name for it. Valvoline Inc. is based in Lexington, Kentucky, and its report for fiscal 2025 counts about 2,200 service centers under its VIOC and Great Canadian Oil Change brands, 1,016 of them company-owned and the rest franchised.

It's the drive-in service chain, not the motor oil on store shelves. Valvoline sold its lubricants business to Aramco in March 2023, so a bottle of Valvoline oil from an auto parts store won't show up as VIOC.

Some shops have changed names recently. Valvoline completed its purchase of Breeze Autocare, nearly 200 stores mostly branded Oil Changers, in December 2025, so a shop you remember under an old name may now be a Valvoline.

Why is VIOC on my card statement?

Someone with your card had a car serviced at a Valvoline Instant Oil Change. You stay in the car, and Valvoline says the visit takes about 15 minutes, which is exactly why it's easy to forget, or to not mention to whoever pays the card.

  • An oil change. Valvoline doesn't publish a single price; it says the cost depends on the oil you pick, how many quarts the engine needs, and any discounts.
  • Add-ons. Valvoline lists battery, bulb and wiper replacements, tire rotations and other recommended maintenance among its services. A total higher than expected usually means one of these was added.
  • Another driver. A partner, a teenager or an employee on a company card took the car in.

There's no subscription behind a VIOC charge. Each one is a single visit.

How to get a refund from Valvoline Instant Oil Change

There's nothing to cancel. For a wrong amount, a double charge or a service you didn't approve, contact the store or Valvoline's customer care team.

  1. Find the store. Match the city on your statement to a location with the store finder on vioc.com, and call the store with the date and amount.
  2. Or call Valvoline customer care at 1-800-327-8242, Monday to Friday 8am to 9pm and Saturday 8am to 8pm Eastern, except holidays. Live chat on vioc.com keeps the same hours.
  3. Or use the email form at vioc.com/contact-us. Valvoline says it replies within 24 to 48 hours.

Valvoline doesn't publish a general refund policy, though its FAQ says air conditioning service comes with a 30-day warranty. Use the phone number on vioc.com; third-party sites list others.

What if nobody got an oil change?

A forgotten 15-minute stop by another driver is the usual answer. Check that first.

  • Ask everyone who drives a car you pay for, or who has a card on your account, whether they had any service done.
  • Match the city on the charge to a Valvoline near where someone in the household lives, works or travels.
  • Check your email and the Valvoline app for a receipt or service reminder.
  • See whether the amount looks like an oil change plus extras.

If nobody visited a Valvoline, call customer care at 1-800-327-8242 with the date, amount and location, then report the charge to your card issuer as unauthorized and get a new card.

Still don’t recognize it? Dispute it with your bank

  1. Open the transaction in your banking app. The detail view often shows a longer merchant name, a phone number or a city that the statement line cuts off.
  2. Ask the merchant for a refund first. It is usually faster than a dispute, and your card issuer may ask whether you tried.
  3. If the merchant says no, or you think your card number was stolen, call the number on the back of your card. Ask them to dispute the charge and, if it is fraud, to cancel the card and send a new one.
  4. For a credit card, follow up in writing. The FTC says your letter should reach the issuer within 60 days after the first bill with the error was sent to you, at the billing inquiries address rather than the payments address.

Federal law caps what you owe for unauthorized credit card charges at $50. Debit cards work differently: if only your card number was used, you owe nothing as long as you report it within 60 days after the statement is sent, but the money is gone from your account while the bank looks into it. See the FTC's guide to lost or stolen cards. A successful dispute becomes a chargeback against the merchant.
