What is the 12 Legal Templates charge on my credit card?

Facts checked

Short answer

12 Legal Templates is LegalTemplates.net, a website that sells fill-in legal forms such as leases, bills of sale and powers of attorney. It starts with a 7-day free trial that turns into a $49.95 monthly subscription, and the company says it doesn't send a reminder or receipt for each renewal. You cancel in User Settings on legaltemplates.net.

How it shows up on your statement

  • 12 LEGAL TEMPLATES
  • 12LEGALTEMPLATES.NET
  • 12LEGALTEMPLATESNET

Banks trim and reformat these, so yours may be shorter or carry a different city or number. Why charge names look strange.

Who is 12 Legal Templates?

It's LegalTemplates.net. The site sells legal documents you fill in online: leases, bills of sale, powers of attorney, LLC operating agreements, wills. Its terms of use say the agreement is with Legal Templates Inc., and that cards are charged "by and through its wholly owned subsidiary Resume Technologies Limited" in London.

Nobody has explained the 12 in the statement name, but the link is solid. A cardholder filed a BBB complaint in September 2026 saying "The Merchant is 12 Legal Templates" and that they were still being charged $49.95 every month, and the company replied as Legal Templates, explaining its trial. On Trustpilot, reviewers say their banks traced the 12legaltemplates.net charge to legaltemplates.net.

Don't go to 12legaltemplates.net. It's a parked domain for sale, not the company's site, and one reviewer said it loaded a scam page claiming their phone had been hacked. Type legaltemplates.net instead. LegalTemplates.com, for what it's worth, is a different company with different terms.

Why is 12 Legal Templates on my card statement?

The usual story: someone searches for a free legal form, fills in the questionnaire, and is asked for a card before they can download it. One Trustpilot reviewer described a site that said "Free Forms" and only mentioned the subscription once the form was filled in.

  • The free trial ended. LegalTemplates.net's terms say that at the end of the trial you're automatically enrolled in the monthly plan. Its help center gives the trial as 7 days and the plan as $49.95 a month.
  • It kept going. The terms say charges continue until you cancel, and in a BBB reply the company said not using the account doesn't cancel it.
  • Nobody was reminded. In the same reply, the company said it doesn't send a separate receipt, invoice or renewal notice for each monthly charge, which is why people find months of charges at once.
  • An older price. Some cardholders were billed $39.95 a month on plans that started before the current price.
  • The annual plan, which LegalTemplates.net lists at $119.88 a year.

How to cancel 12 Legal Templates and get a refund

Cancelling is self-serve. Getting money back is a request, not a right, so ask in writing.

  1. Log in at legaltemplates.net, click your profile icon in the top-right corner, and choose User Settings.
  2. Under Current Plan, click Cancel. If there's no Cancel button, the company says the subscription is already inactive.
  3. Ask for a refund by emailing support@legaltemplates.net with the account email, the last 4 digits of the card, and the date and amount of each charge. Live chat runs Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm Eastern.
  4. Once it's cancelled, you can delete the account under User Settings, then Delete Account. The site won't let you delete it while a subscription is active.

The refund rules are tighter than they look. The terms say a refund has to be requested within 30 days of the purchase, and the help center says requests are reviewed case by case. In BBB replies during 2026, the company often offered to refund the latest monthly charge as a goodwill gesture, and once offered six months. The terms also list a phone number, (855) 335-9779, but one reviewer said it didn't work, so start with email or chat.

What if you never signed up for Legal Templates?

The trial needs an account, so there's usually an email trail.

  • Search your email and spam for Legal Templates, legaltemplates.net and LegalTemplates around the date of the first charge.
  • Think about anyone in the house looking for a free form online: a bill of sale, a lease, a power of attorney, an eviction notice. The first charge usually lands 7 days later.
  • Email support@legaltemplates.net with the last 4 digits of the card and the charge details, and ask them to find any account billing that card. If they can't find one, ask them to say so in writing.

If nobody in your household signed up, report the charge to your card issuer as unauthorized. If you did sign up and forgot, the dispute is about cancellation rather than fraud, and issuers sometimes side with the merchant. Either way, a new card number may not be enough by itself: one reviewer said their bank passed the subscription on to the replacement card. Cancel on the site as well and ask the bank to block the merchant.

Our research found no action against the company by the FTC, a state attorney general or a court. The BBB lists 324 complaints over three years and rates the business B.

Still don’t recognize it? Dispute it with your bank

  1. Open the transaction in your banking app. The detail view often shows a longer merchant name, a phone number or a city that the statement line cuts off.
  2. Ask the merchant for a refund first. It is usually faster than a dispute, and your card issuer may ask whether you tried.
  3. If the merchant says no, or you think your card number was stolen, call the number on the back of your card. Ask them to dispute the charge and, if it is fraud, to cancel the card and send a new one.
  4. For a credit card, follow up in writing. The FTC says your letter should reach the issuer within 60 days after the first bill with the error was sent to you, at the billing inquiries address rather than the payments address.

Federal law caps what you owe for unauthorized credit card charges at $50. Debit cards work differently: if only your card number was used, you owe nothing as long as you report it within 60 days after the statement is sent, but the money is gone from your account while the bank looks into it. See the FTC's guide to lost or stolen cards. A successful dispute becomes a chargeback against the merchant.
