What is the Good Sportsman charge on my credit card?

Facts checked

Short answer

Good Sportsman is Good Sportsman Marketing, LLC, the Texas company better known as GSM Outdoors. It owns Stealth Cam, Muddy and Wildgame Innovations, and a recurring Good Sportsman charge is almost always a data plan for one of their cellular trail cameras. Each camera is billed monthly or yearly until it is removed from the app.

How it shows up on your statement

  • GOOD SPORTSMAN
  • GSM OUTDOORS

Banks trim and reformat these, so yours may be shorter or carry a different city or number. Why charge names look strange.

Who is Good Sportsman?

Good Sportsman Marketing, LLC is a hunting, shooting and fishing gear company at 5250 Frye Road in Irving, Texas. It trades as GSM Outdoors and lists 58 brands on its site, among them SOG Knives, Cold Steel, Walker's, TruGlo, Evolved and Birchwood Casey.

Three of those brands explain nearly every Good Sportsman charge people ask about: Stealth Cam, Muddy Outdoors and Wildgame Innovations. All three sell cellular trail cameras, which send photos to your phone over a mobile network and need a paid data plan to do it. The apps that sell those plans list Good Sportsman Marketing, LLC as the seller, so that is the name your bank prints. Nothing on the statement says Stealth Cam or Wildgame.

Why is Good Sportsman on my card statement?

Most often it's a trail camera plan that kept renewing. One Reddit user who went looking for the same charge put it in one line: "it's from my cellular trail cam. Monthly subscription." The plans are charged straight to your card rather than through Apple or Google, so they never show up in your phone's subscription list.

  • Stealth Cam and Muddy cameras run on the Command app. Plans cost $5, $8 or $20 a month per camera, or $60, $96 or $240 a year, and a Live View add-on is another $5 a month.
  • Wildgame Innovations cameras run on the HuntSmart app, where plans are $6, $10 or $12 a month, with cheaper annual versions.
  • A yearly plan renews as one bigger charge, often in the off-season, long after anyone thought about the camera.
  • Every camera has its own plan. Three cameras on one account means three charges.
  • A web store order from a GSM brand can show the parent name too. Evolved, for one, says its orders appear on statements as GSM Outdoors.

If nobody in your house owns one of these cameras, think wider. A relative, a hunting partner or someone on your hunting lease may have set a camera up with your card.

How to cancel Good Sportsman charges or get a refund

There's no website account to close. You stop the billing by removing each camera from its app, and GSM's help center says payments for a camera stop once it's been removed. For Stealth Cam and Muddy cameras in the Command app:

  1. Open the Command app and tap the personal info icon at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Go to the Plans tab and pick the camera.
  3. Scroll to the bottom and choose Remove. Do this for every camera on the account.
  4. Open the Billing History tab from the same icon to see what you've paid and when.

Choose Remove, not Suspend, if you want the charges gone for good. GSM's article covers both options, and one App Store reviewer said they were still charged after suspending a camera.

Wildgame cameras are managed inside the HuntSmart app. If the app won't let you cancel, call GSM at 877-269-8490 or email wirelesstechsupport@gsmorg.com, the address GSM's developer account gave a reviewer with the same problem.

GSM doesn't publish a refund policy for data plans. If you paid for months on a camera nobody used, call and ask for a refund of the unused time. It's their call, but nothing happens if you don't ask.

What if you never bought anything from Good Sportsman?

Run through these before you call the bank. They clear up most of these charges.

  • Ask everyone who uses the card whether they hunt or own a trail camera. Name the brands: Stealth Cam, Muddy and Wildgame Innovations.
  • Search your email for Stealth Cam, Command, HuntSmart, Wildgame, GSM Outdoors and gsmorg.com.
  • Compare the amount with the plan prices above. Exactly $5, $6, $8, $10, $12 or $20, or a yearly $60, $96 or $240, points straight at a data plan.
  • Call GSM at 877-269-8490 with the charge date, the amount and the last four digits of the card, and ask them to find any account using that card and remove it.

This isn't Sportsman's Warehouse, its store credit card, or Sportsman's Guide. Those are separate companies. If GSM can't find an account tied to your card, treat the charge as unauthorized and dispute it.

Still don’t recognize it? Dispute it with your bank

  1. Open the transaction in your banking app. The detail view often shows a longer merchant name, a phone number or a city that the statement line cuts off.
  2. Ask the merchant for a refund first. It is usually faster than a dispute, and your card issuer may ask whether you tried.
  3. If the merchant says no, or you think your card number was stolen, call the number on the back of your card. Ask them to dispute the charge and, if it is fraud, to cancel the card and send a new one.
  4. For a credit card, follow up in writing. The FTC says your letter should reach the issuer within 60 days after the first bill with the error was sent to you, at the billing inquiries address rather than the payments address.

Federal law caps what you owe for unauthorized credit card charges at $50. Debit cards work differently: if only your card number was used, you owe nothing as long as you report it within 60 days after the statement is sent, but the money is gone from your account while the bank looks into it. See the FTC's guide to lost or stolen cards. A successful dispute becomes a chargeback against the merchant.

Questions people ask

Why is Good Sportsman charging my credit card every month?
Almost always because of a cellular trail camera data plan for a Stealth Cam, Muddy or Wildgame Innovations camera. Each camera is billed monthly or yearly until it's removed from the Command or HuntSmart app.
Is Good Sportsman a scam?
No. Good Sportsman Marketing, LLC is a real company in Irving, Texas that trades as GSM Outdoors and owns dozens of outdoor brands. A charge you can't place is usually a forgotten camera plan. If nobody on the card owns one of its cameras, call GSM at 877-269-8490 and then your bank.
Why can't I find the Good Sportsman subscription on my iPhone?
Because Apple doesn't bill it. The Command and HuntSmart apps charge your card directly, so you cancel by removing the camera inside the app, not in your Apple or Google subscriptions.
What is the Good Sportsman phone number?
GSM Outdoors lists 877-269-8490 on gsmoutdoors.com and on the Stealth Cam and Wildgame Innovations contact pages.
Is Good Sportsman the same as Sportsman's Warehouse?
No. Sportsman's Warehouse is a separate retailer with its own store card. Good Sportsman Marketing makes hunting gear and trail cameras under brands like Stealth Cam and Wildgame Innovations.
