Elavon shows 4.0 out of 5 on Trustpilot across 655 reviews, and the average hides the shape of it. 56% of those reviews are five stars and 42% are one star, with almost nothing in between. The five star ones are invited and describe a single good phone call. The one star ones are unprompted and describe held funds, ignored cancellations and closed accounts. Capterra, which verifies its reviewers before publishing, puts Elavon at 2.9 out of 5.

What the third-party review record shows

As of August 2026 Elavon's US Trustpilot page sits at 4.0 out of 5 across 655 reviews. The distribution is the story: 56% five star, 1% four star, under 1% at three and two stars, and 42% one star. Almost nobody rates Elavon three out of five, which is not what a normal service distribution looks like.

The split has a mechanical explanation. Trustpilot states on the profile that Elavon invites its customers to review, and all twenty reviews on the first page of five star results carry the Verified badge that marks an invited review, with not one marked unprompted. Nearly all of them are about a single support call, and most are titled with the first name of the agent who took it. On the one star page the labels flip: all twenty entries on the first page are marked unprompted, and they are about money rather than manners, with reviewers describing balances held, accounts debited after cancellation and merchant accounts closed with no warning.

Capterra, which verifies reviewers, gives a flatter and probably fairer number: 2.9 out of 5 across 34 reviews, with ease of use at 2.9 and customer service at 2.5. The recurring Capterra themes are fee structures that are hard to reconcile, an admin portal reviewers find unintuitive, and billing that continued after cancellation. Merchant Maverick, which rates Elavon 3.0 out of 5, counts 131 Better Business Bureau complaints filed in three years, 62 of them within the last twelve months, against an A plus BBB rating held since 2009.

Themes across public reviews

Pros

  • Reviewers who reach a support agent by phone describe fast, competent first call resolution, and Trustpilot's five star page is almost entirely those calls
  • Elavon replies to 89% of negative Trustpilot reviews, typically within 24 hours, and each reply carries a case reference number and the askelavon@elavon.com mailbox to escalate to
  • Merchants who stay for years describe processing itself as reliable, with Capterra reviewers naming steady payouts and straightforward transaction reporting
  • Terminal replacement and software update calls get consistently good marks, including out of hours: one August 2026 review is about a Sunday afternoon fix
  • Capterra lists nonprofits and long tenure customers describing pricing as competitive for their sector, which fits a quoted rate that rewards negotiation
  • Capterra reviewers name reputation and security features among the reasons they stay, which is the thing a bank owned acquirer is actually selling

Cons

  • Held and debited funds are the most serious complaint, with one star reviewers describing balances frozen for months and no explanation given
  • Cancellation is the second theme: reviewers say a closure request was acknowledged and then billing continued, which Capterra reviewers report as well
  • Fee transparency runs through both platforms, with reviewers saying the PCI fee, annual fee or rate on the statement did not match what they were sold
  • Support quality is bimodal rather than bad, so the same company produces a five star review naming the agent who walked a merchant through a software upgrade and a one star review from a merchant whose $4,000 has been held for over a year
  • Equipment complaints recur, with an August 2026 reviewer describing terminals returned as non working and card acceptance limits misrepresented at sale, and Merchant Maverick flagging terminal leases sold through a partner
  • The reply on negative reviews is a template asking you to email a reference number, and at least one reviewer came back to post a second time saying nothing had changed

What the review record will not tell you

Split the complaints before you weigh them. One group is about the instrument. Elavon is a bank owned acquirer, so it underwrites you properly, holds reserves where its risk team says to, and can freeze settlement while it reviews an account. Any full service acquirer will do that, and a merchant who arrived expecting a self serve fintech will rate it as theft. It is the trade you accepted in exchange for a bank counterparty, cross border processing and named account management.

The other group is about the company, and it is the part worth taking seriously. Nothing about being a regulated acquirer requires you to keep billing an account after a merchant cancels it, or to leave a frozen balance unexplained for months. Those complaints recur on Trustpilot, on Capterra and in the BBB file, and they are the ones a template reply does not answer.

There is a third thing the reviews cannot show you, which is who sold you the account. Elavon runs a large reseller network, and the contract, the rate, the equipment lease and the termination terms come from that reseller rather than from elavon.com. A one star review about a surprise fee may be about an agent's paper, not about Elavon's schedule. Before signing, ask whether any terminal lease is with Elavon or with Ladco Global Leasing Solutions, the leasing partner Merchant Maverick names behind the four year noncancelable leases in its review, and what happens to the lease if you leave. If the quote comes back opaque, published pricing exists elsewhere: Square and Helcim both put their full rate card online, and Worldpay is the closest like for like if you need a legacy acquirer at Elavon's scale.

What reviewers say in their own words

Excerpts below are quoted from reviews published on third-party platforms, with a link to each source. They are not reviews submitted to this site, and they do not count toward the Elavon rating shown above. All six excerpts are from Elavon's US Trustpilot page, where 42% of reviews are one star and 56% are five stars; the five critical ones are marked unprompted and the last one is an invited review, which is the split that produces the 4.0 average.

  • "The worst scammers. Are holding $4000 of our funds for over a year and refusing to answer calls or reply to emails. They assured us teh funds would be retunred then lied and disappeared."
    1 out of 5, Trustpilot, August 2026
  • "Do NOT do business with this company. If you decide to cancel your account they will ignore the request; string you along; expect a record of cancellation (which they will not record); automatically take funds out of your bank account; and deny there was a cancellation request."
    1 out of 5, Trustpilot, August 2026
  • "Absolute bunch of crooks! Thieves! We're currently filing a law suite against Elavon as we woke one morning to find that this company kept over 140k and to date wont say why? Theyve dodged our attorney for months and everyday the reps there are hiding as well."
    1 out of 5, Trustpilot, July 2026
  • "I rarely leave negative reviews, but my experience with this merchant services provider has been extremely disappointing. I was promised transparency, fair pricing, and no hidden fees. Unfortunately, my actual experience has been the complete opposite."
    1 out of 5, Trustpilot, June 2026
  • "An absolutely egregious company to work with for your business. Please read the Google reviews about how their company operates. They have no code of ethics and the customer service is below one star."
    1 out of 5, Trustpilot, July 2026
  • "The technician was exceptionally knowledgeable. With clear instructions, she guided me through software upgrade process. And while waiting for the upgrade, she patiently answered all my questions with answers that I would understand. We have been bothered with some issues for the past 4 years and no one seemed to be able to fully resolve them."

Frequently asked questions

Are these Elavon reviews verified?
The figures on this page come from Elavon's US Trustpilot page, from Capterra, and from Merchant Maverick's count of Better Business Bureau complaints, and all were current in August 2026. Capterra verifies reviewers before publishing. Trustpilot is open, and it labels each review as either invited by the company or unprompted, which turns out to be the single most useful thing on the page. None of these are reviews submitted to this site. No merchant has published one here yet, which is why the list above is empty rather than showing a borrowed score.
Why is Elavon 4.0 on Trustpilot but 2.9 on Capterra?
Because the two platforms are collecting from different moments. Trustpilot tells you Elavon invites its customers to review, and on the first page of five star reviews every single one carries the Verified badge Trustpilot uses for an invited review. Read them and the reason is obvious: they are about one support call, usually naming the agent who fixed a terminal update or a login problem. Capterra collects from people describing a product they use every day, including its billing and its admin portal, and scores customer service at 2.5 out of 5. Neither number is wrong. They answer different questions, and only one of them is about what it is like to be an Elavon merchant for a year.
What do Elavon reviewers complain about most?
Funds held or debited without explanation, first and loudest. The one star reviews describe balances frozen for months, amounts pulled back out of a bank account, and no answer as to why. Second, cancellation: reviewers say they asked to close an account, were told it was done, and kept being billed. Third, fee transparency, which Capterra reviewers raise alongside dispute handling and report access, with reviewers saying the PCI fee, the annual fee and the rate they were quoted did not match the statement. Fourth, support quality, which splits sharply between people who reached a good agent on the first call and people who spent months escalating.
Does Elavon reply to negative reviews?
Yes, and Trustpilot puts the figure at 89% of negative reviews, typically within 24 hours. The replies are close to identical: an apology, a line about the experience not meeting expectations, and a request to email askelavon@elavon.com with a name, phone number, time zone, a reference number and the Merchant ID. Trustpilot also flags on the profile that the company may use AI assistance with replies. A fast reply rate is worth something, but reading fifteen of them in a row is a fair test of whether the response is a resolution process or a queue.
