Overview

What Clover hardware costs

Clover software runs only on Clover hardware, so the device price is part of the decision rather than an accessory to it. Bought outright from Clover.com, a Flex handheld is $749. Merchant Maverick's list puts the Go card reader at $49, the Mini at $849, the Station Solo at $1,799 and the Station Duo at $1,899, with the Flex and Flex Pocket between $699 and $749 depending on model.

Clover also runs a standing promotion: a 36 month device rental at one cent a month for the Compact, Flex or Flex Pocket. The qualifying conditions sit in the footnote on the same page. The Compact deal needs $100,000 in annual processing volume and a three-year merchant processing agreement. The Flex deal needs $200,000. Both add that hardware rental is subject to early termination fees, and both are limited to businesses that have not held a First Data Merchant Services account during 2026.

Buying Clover direct or through a reseller

Clover is the small-business POS where one product reaches you through two entirely different commercial channels. Fiserv sells it at the prices on Clover.com. Banks and independent sales organizations also sell it, each setting its own rate, its own monthly fees and its own term. The box on the counter is identical either way.

Dharma Merchant Services, one of the resellers Merchant Maverick rates highly, lists the Station Duo at $2,099 where Clover.com lists $1,899, and the Compact at $299 where Clover.com lists $349. Hardware prices move in both directions; rate cards and contract lengths vary more. Merchant Maverick's advice here is blunt: do not lease hardware from a Clover reseller, because the monthly payments add up to more than the devices are worth.

Two questions settle most of it before you sign. Who is the merchant services provider named on the agreement, and what is the term and the early termination fee? Neither answer is on Clover.com, because neither is Clover's to give.

Clover vs Square

On headline rate the two are close. Clover charges 2.6% + $0.10 on tapped, swiped and inserted cards on its Starter plan and 2.3% + $0.10 on the Retail Growth and Restaurant Growth plans, with keyed cards at 3.5% + $0.10. Square publishes 2.6% + $0.15 in person on its free plan, dropping to 2.5% and 2.4% on the paid tiers, and 3.3% + $0.30 online.

The difference is structural. Square has one price list, one company on the agreement and a free software tier. Clover has a price list on Clover.com plus whatever the bank or ISO in front of you decides to charge, and its own promotions require a three-year processing agreement. Square is the simpler purchase and the cheaper exit. Clover has the wider hardware range and an App Market at over 450 apps by Merchant Maverick's count.

Pros

  • Publishes complete system prices online instead of quoting them: $16 a month for 36 months or $349 for a Compact terminal on Starter, $180 a month or $1,899 plus $84.95 a month for a Station Duo on Retail Growth
  • Card-present pricing drops to 2.3% + $0.10 on the Retail Growth and Restaurant Growth plans, and every full-service restaurant bundle carries that rate rather than the 2.6% Starter rate
  • One vendor covers hardware, POS software, online ordering, invoicing, gift cards and staff management, plus an App Market that Merchant Maverick counts at over 450 apps
  • Rapid Deposit puts card takings in the bank within minutes of a sale for a published 1.75% of the amount transferred, deducted from the next standard deposit

Cons

  • Clover's own hardware promotion terms require a three-year merchant processing agreement, and Merchant Maverick reports a 36 or 48 month software contract with an early termination fee equal to whatever is left on it
  • Clover software runs only on Clover hardware, and CardFellow reports that a device bought through one processor cannot be reprogrammed for another, so switching processors means buying the equipment again
  • The same system is sold by Fiserv and by many banks and ISOs on their own rate cards, so 2.3% to 2.6% is a floor rather than a price: Dharma Merchant Services lists the Station Duo at $2,099 where Clover.com lists $1,899, and the Compact at $299 where Clover.com lists $349
  • Support is split across your merchant services provider, Clover itself and each App Market developer, and Merchant Maverick notes long wait times on the 24/7 phone line

Frequently asked questions

How much does Clover cost?
It depends on the bundle. Clover.com prices a Compact terminal on the Starter plan at $16 a month for 36 months or $349 outright, a Station Duo on Retail Growth at $180 a month for 36 months or $1,899 plus $84.95 a month, and the top full-service restaurant system at $354 a month or $4,447 plus $129.85 a month. Software-only plans for professional services are $0, $29.95 or $84.95 a month. Processing is 2.6% + $0.10 card present on Starter and 2.3% + $0.10 on the Retail Growth and Restaurant Growth plans, with keyed and online cards at 3.5% + $0.10. Buying through a bank or ISO instead of Clover.com changes all of it.
Does Clover require a contract?
Yes. Clover's own hardware promotion footnote says the offer requires a three-year merchant processing agreement and that hardware rental is subject to early termination fees. Merchant Maverick reports a 36 or 48 month software contract when you buy direct, with an early termination fee equal to the balance remaining on the term. Resellers write their own paper, so some sell shorter terms and a few sell month to month. The length of your commitment is set by whoever signs you up, not by Clover.
Is Clover good for high-risk merchants?
No. Clover accounts are underwritten by Fiserv or by the bank or independent sales organization reselling the system, and the product is built for ordinary retail, restaurant and appointment-based businesses. Clover does not publish a high-risk program or offshore acquiring, so merchants in restricted categories need a specialist acquirer instead. There is a second reason to look elsewhere. Because a Clover device cannot be reprogrammed for a different processor, a merchant who gets repriced or offboarded mid-term is left holding hardware that only works for the processor that just dropped them.
How long do Clover payouts take?
Clover does not publish a single funding schedule, because settlement is set by the merchant services provider on the account rather than by the POS. Its own help center describes standard deposits as taking a few days to reach your bank. Rapid Deposit is the paid alternative: Clover charges 1.75% of each transfer, deducted from your next standard deposit, and the funds land within minutes of a card sale. That 1.75% appears on every plan tier of the retail pricing page. If deposit timing matters to your cash flow, get the schedule in writing from whoever is selling you the account.
