Merchant of record for digital products at 5% + 50 cents a sale, owned by Stripe since 2024 and now steering sellers to Stripe Managed Payments.
Stripe announced the deal on 26 July 2024. TechCrunch reported that the team was 13 people, that the company had passed $1 million in annual recurring revenue nine months after its 2021 public launch, and that it had turned down a $50 million Series A term sheet.
What has happened since is documented, but not on a cadence anyone would call active. The newest changelog entry is 18 August 2025, when checkout localization shipped in 34 languages. On 28 January 2026 CEO JR Farr published an update that opened by owning the silence and named the cost of it plainly: slower support responses and less frequent product updates. The same post said where the engineering had gone, which is Stripe Managed Payments, Stripe's own merchant of record product, and that the goal is to give Lemon Squeezy users an easy way to migrate to it.
The signup flow reflects that. Registering now opens on a step headed Tell us about your business, which says the answers will be used to recommend the best path for your business. New accounts are still being accepted, and no shutdown date has been published for the Lemon Squeezy platform.
Lemon Squeezy is the legal seller on every order. Your customer's card statement carries Lemon Squeezy rather than your business, and the indirect tax liability sits with Lemon Squeezy in every jurisdiction where the sale is taxable. That is the reason to pay 5% instead of a card processor's rate: you are buying out registration, filing and audit exposure, not just card acceptance.
It also means some decisions stop being yours. You set your own refund policy, but Lemon Squeezy reserves the right to issue a refund within 60 days of purchase at its own discretion to head off a chargeback. Chargebacks are handled on your behalf, and the refunded amount less the platform fee, plus a $15 dispute fee, comes out of your next payout. Lemon Squeezy states that a store with too many chargebacks may be suspended.
Delivery is why software sellers chose Lemon Squeezy over a plain checkout. License keys are generated on purchase and can be deactivated or reissued from the dashboard or through the license API, and keys can be tied to subscription status so a lapsed subscription invalidates the key. Files are served through signed, throttled download links rather than public URLs.
Around that sit usage-based billing, a self-service customer portal, pay what you want pricing, lead magnets, discount codes, an affiliate platform, abandoned cart and dunning recovery, and an email marketing tool that is free up to 500 subscribers. Checkout can be a hosted page, a shared link, or an overlay dropped onto your own site with Lemon.js. Subscriptions are narrower than one-off sales on payment methods: cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal only, while one-off purchases can also take Alipay, WeChat Pay, Cash App Pay and bank debits.
Paddle publishes the same headline number, 5% + 50 cents per checkout transaction, with no international or subscription surcharge listed on its pricing page. Lemon Squeezy's surcharges make the real comparison less clean: a subscription renewal from a customer outside the US costs 7% + $0.50 here.
Stripe Managed Payments, the product Lemon Squeezy merchants are being pointed at, is priced as an add-on rather than an all-in rate. Stripe charges 3.5% per successful Managed Payments transaction, calculated on the full amount including any indirect tax, and that sits on top of standard Stripe processing fees rather than replacing them. It covers indirect tax compliance in more than 80 countries, but it accepts sellers in only 38 business locations, it is digital products only, and it does not work with Connect platforms or marketplaces. Sellers in the 119 countries on Lemon Squeezy's bank payout list who fall outside those 38 have nowhere obvious to migrate to.
Pricing at a glance
Lemon Squeezy charges 5% + $0.50 per transaction with no monthly or setup fee, then adds 1.5% outside the US, 1.5% on PayPal and 0.5% on subscriptions. Payouts are created on the 1st and 15th, held 13 days, released on the 14th and 28th, and carry a $50 minimum.
