Merchant of record for developers that sells your product under its own name, handles sales tax and VAT liability, and pays you out through Stripe Connect.
Polar is a merchant of record founded in Stockholm in 2022 by Birk Jernström, who previously founded Tictail and ran product for Shop at Shopify after the 2018 acquisition. It began as a monetization tool for open-source maintainers and shipped version 1.0 of the merchant-of-record product in September 2024. Accel led a $10 million seed round in June 2025 alongside Abstract, Mischief and a long list of founder angels. By mid-2025 Polar reported more than 18,000 customers across over 100 countries. The platform itself is open source, which is part of why it spread through indie developer circles as fast as it did.
Polar publishes a full rate card across four plans. Starter is free and takes 5% + $0.50 per transaction. Pro is $20 a month at 3.8% + $0.40, Growth is $100 a month at 3.6% + $0.35, and Scale is $400 a month at 3.4% + $0.30. Polar puts the break-even points at roughly $1,379, $5,634 and $19,048 of monthly sales. Cards issued outside the United States add 1.5%, a dispute costs $15, and legacy Early Member accounts remain on 4% + $0.40 with an extra 0.5% on subscription renewals. Payout costs are Stripe's, passed through with no Polar markup: $2 in any month with a payout, then 0.25% + $0.25 per withdrawal, plus 0.25% currency conversion inside the EU and up to 1% elsewhere. Payouts are manual, never automatic. Organizations created after May 12, 2026 carry a 7-day settlement delay on each transaction. Batches process about 24 hours after you trigger them, and money lands in 4 to 7 business days. Minimum withdrawal is $10 in USD, around $13 in EUR and $15 in GBP, with roughly 30 currencies set near a $40 equivalent.
Polar targets solo developers and small AI or SaaS teams who want to sell worldwide without registering for VAT in a dozen jurisdictions. Sellers can be based in 145 countries because payouts run on Stripe Connect Express, which reaches markets where standard Stripe Payments is unavailable, India included. The exclusions are the US sanctions list: Cuba, Russia, Iran, North Korea and Syria.
The headline 5% looks expensive next to Stripe's own 2.9% + $0.30, and that is the wrong comparison. A gateway charges you to move a card payment while you stay the legal seller: you register for and remit VAT and GST, and you fight your own chargebacks. Polar becomes the seller of record instead. It is named on the customer's statement, it calculates and remits the tax, it carries the liability, and you never open a merchant account. Stripe still does card processing, authorization, settlement, fraud monitoring, refunds and chargebacks underneath, though Polar does not disclose what share of the 5% Stripe keeps. The trade is control for coverage, and the control you give up is real. Polar holds accounts to a 0.4% chargeback rate, stricter than the 0.7% card networks tolerate. It runs a KYC review of up to 14 days before your first payout, and it can hold funds until the 120-day chargeback window closes. Trustpilot reviewers describe that experience directly: abrupt account closures, held payouts and slow support. Compare Polar with Paddle, Lemon Squeezy and Dodo Payments, not with Stripe.

Non-US cards add 1.5% and a dispute costs $15. Those rates cover the sales tax and VAT liability a plain gateway leaves with you.
